What is NSSI?

Updated: Mar 25

NSSI stands for Non-Suicidal Self-Injury which is when one deliberately hurts themselves to release excruciating negative emotions but does so in a non-suicidal way.

What We Know About NSSI

Research on NSSI is still developing, but it's clear it's an important mental health issue. It is particularly prevalent in adolescents and young adults, where studies indicate that up to 25% of youth may practice some form of self-injury.

What We Need to Know

It is important to recognize that NSSI is not just about attention-seeking; it is a complex behavior that needs a thoughtful and compassionate response. It’s also not just a “phase” that people outgrow. Individuals who engage in NSSI are often struggling with underlying mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, or unresolved trauma. These behaviors are a way to cope, though not a healthy one.

Why is MHFA Focusing on NSSI?

MHFA emphasizes understanding and providing first aid to those in mental health crises. Addressing NSSI is a critical part of this effort, as it often signals that a person is experiencing deep psychological pain. By learning to recognize the signs of NSSI, offering support, and guiding individuals towards professional help, we can prevent further harm and help individuals develop healthier coping strategies.

Conclusion

NSSI is a concerning mental health issue that needs more attention. By talking about it, sharing information, and supporting those who struggle, we can break the silence and foster a culture of understanding and compassion.
